A.T.E.N.A, “A Temporary Atelier for Artistic Navigation, was founded in 2017 by Lise Chevalier, artistic director. It is meant as a laboratory : a space for reflection, research,
experimentation, collaboration, and discussion. International women artists are supported in
their over a period of 3 years.
The residency is located in Sète. Known commonly as the “singular island“,Sète is a Mediterranean port town bordered on one side by the sea and on the other by a lagoon. This residency has already welcomed eleven women artists from abroad, and counts 31 stays-in-residency since its creation. The residents come several times to develop their research projects that culminate in an exhibition.
Throughout the year, ATENA is also active in : public events, performances, temporary exhibitions in the studio itself, conferences and workshops at Ecole des Beaux Arts in Sète, collective artist book‘s

A.T.E.N.A - Temporary European Atelier of Artistic Navigation is a residency program initiated by Lise Chevalier, a French visual artist living and working in Sète, France.
«This residency is a laboratory, an invitation from artist to artist. This sharing-atelier is a space for reflection, production and collaboration which turns to an exchange platform. Women artists are many, but not enough exhibited. That’s also a reason why this project wants to highlight women's contemporary art practices. The particularity of this residency program is to be organized and is conceptualised by the artists themselves. A desire to work together is the real starting point in this project to collaborate and create a freedom’s frame."
This residency is supported by the City of Sète.
